Reports of conservation and corrections work camps, 1967-1973.

Record group 81-74 consists of reports of conservation and corrections work camps for the years 1967-1973. Contains summary reports of daily output of the work camps, and correspondence to officials of the work camps. The camps were established to alleviate overcrowding among prisoners in Michigan prisons. Public Act 274 of 1949 officially sanctioned the program. The prisoners lived in minimum security camps throughout the state. They provided manpower for the Parks Division by planting trees, making trails, and maintaining facilities. They worked under a foreman and were supervised by park managers. Public Act 119 of 1981 transferred the administration of this program to the Corrections Department.
